Baldia Factory Victims Raise Concerns Over ILO Compensation
February 6, 2025KARACHI, 28 January 2025 — General Secretary of the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) Pakistan, Nasir Mansoor, has condemned the recent amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025, calling them a significant setback for Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
At a protest organized by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists in Karachi, Mansoor highlighted that the Act’s restrictions on digital expression violate both Pakistan’s constitution and Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of expression.
Mansoor stated, “However, Pakistan’s democratic forces have historically resisted such authoritarian measures, and they will continue to do so.” He pledged full solidarity with journalists and media organizations in their ongoing protest campaign against the legislation.
“The right to free expression, particularly in digital spaces, is inseparable from workers’ rights and democratic freedoms,” he added.
